Dear P5, P6 and P7 Parents and Carers,
On Friday 4th April, our community Police Officer, PC Berry will be visiting P5, P6 and P7 to talk about Online Safety. There have been several incidents connected to unsafe and unkind behaviours online, in particularly with Snapchat. We would very much appreciate your support with checking your child’s social media and online accounts so that you know what they are posting, as well as what they are seeing from what others post.
The internet is not a thing, it’s a place where children hang out.
The same as with any place a child is going, think of the questions you would ask:
- Where are they going?
- Who are they going with?
- What will they be doing there?
- Can they go on their own or do I need to go with them?
What you can do help keep your child safe:
- Talk to your childabout what they like to do online. Encourage them to talk to you if they ever see something that makes them feel uncomfortable.
- Supervise their activity online by ensuring that devices are only used in communal areas in the house such as the living room and kitchen.
- Be aware of what apps your child is using. You could ask them to teach you how to use them or show you websites they like to interact with.
- Be aware of what parental controls you can set. You will find comprehensive parental control guideshere, for various devices and platforms. Pay particular attention to the age rating on lots of popular apps that your child may be accessing.
The following websites have really good resources with lots of information and advice:
This website has lots of helpful advice and information. It also has examples of resources that may be used by your child’s school to teach internet safety and cyber resilience.
This website has safety guides for parents/carers on apps, games and software. It is updated regularly with any new app/game that might pose a risk.
This website has step by step activities where you can build Lego with your child while also talking to them about digital safety.
Kind regards,
Mrs Collard
